The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio became as messy during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence
At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
