Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
