Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for information.
A senior official said the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
